Dorothy Dawe, age 99 of Elizabeth, Illinois, died Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at the Elizabeth Nursing Home, Elizabeth. Dorothy was born on August 11, 1910, the daughter of Albert and Laura (Pearson) McHenry in Biggsville, Illinois. She graduated from Biggsville High School with the Class of 1928. Dorothy later attended Illinois State University, where she earned her Bachelors Degree in Commercial Education. She married Cletus R. Dawe on September 6, 1936 in Biggsville. Cletus died on November 2, 1991.
Dorothy was a homemaker who loved taking care of her family. She began teaching in 1957 at the Elizabeth High School and continued teaching until retiring in 1972. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, where she played the organ for forty-two years. Dorothy was a member of the Jo Daviess Retired Teachers Association and served on the Elizabeth Library Board. Dorothy and her husband, Cletus were among the first founders to help build the Elizabeth Nursing Home. She enjoyed crocheting afghans, crossword puzzles and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Dorothy will be dearly missed by her two daughters, Joanne (David) Gruendler of Lena, Illinois and Mary Ellen (William) Cobine of Elizabeth; one son, Robert (Marlene) Dawe of Springfield, Illinois; six grandchildren, Barbara (Dave) Klever, Amy McFadden, Robert (Laura) Cobine, Richard Cobine, Lora (Rick) Furlong, Bryan (Erin) Dawe; six great grandchildren, Valerie, Katie, Nick, Shannon, Nicole and Daniel; two step-grandchildren; five step-great grandchildren; and two step-great-great grandchildren; and one special nephew, Jim Dawe.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Cletus; and one brother, John McHenry. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 26, 2010, at the United Methodist Church, Elizabeth. Burial will follow in the Elizabeth Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, April 25, 2010, at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Dorothy’s memory.
