Dorothy J. Caldwell, age 84, of Mount Carroll, Illinois, died Sunday, December 14, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Facility, Mount Carroll. Cremation rites have been accorded. A Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, December 19, 2008, at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. A Memorial Gathering will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. prior to the service at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Mt. Carroll Public Library in Dorothy’s memory. Dorothy was born on November 3, 1924, in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Otto W. and Josephine B. Neidert. Dorothy graduated from Iowa State University where she met her husband, Cal. Dorothy married Cal W. Caldwell on February 28, 1948 in Kansas City. Cal died on June 30, 1972 in Savanna, Illinois.
Dorothy and Cal raised their children on the family farm west of Mount Carroll, where they specialized in thoroughbred horses. Following Cal’s death, she moved to Mount Carroll and was the town librarian for almost thirty years. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, Art Club, and Bridge Club. She enjoyed sewing, flower gardening, and caring for her dog.
Dorothy is survived by three sons, Matthew (Heather) Caldwell of Mount Carroll, James Caldwell of San Francisco, California, and Rex (Pamela) Caldwell of Scottsdale, Arizona; one daughter, Jennifer (Al) Trainer of Cheyenne, Wyoming; six grandchildren, Jenna and Derek Caldwell, Jessica, Amanda, and Greyson Demshar, and Kady Trainer. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Cal.
