Dora Catherine Meyer

Dora Catherine Meyer, age 86, of Maquoketa, IA, passed away on February 5, 2025, at Mill Valley Care Center, in Bellevue. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, February 10, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Preston, IA. Visitation will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, February 9, at the church, as well as one hour prior to Monday’s Mass. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, in Maquoketa.

Dora was born January 4, 1939 in Bellevue, IA, the daughter of Victor and Martha (Feller) Burken. She graduated from Goose Lake High School with the class of 1958. On December 28, 1963, Dora married Wayne A. Meyer at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Clinton, IA. The young couple purchased a farm north of Preston, IA, and Dora began married life as a housewife. It wasn’t long before she became a mother; being blessed with two children, Todd and Julie. Dora and Wayne farmed that land for 37 years, before ultimately moving to Maquoketa in 2002.

Dora was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and a 4H leader, and loved to help her children show cattle. She sewed all her clothes, and in the years after she moved to Maquoketa, she made many quilts and was a member of the Jackson County Fair Quilters, where she won many awards.

After her children graduated from high school, she went back to work at Maquoketa State Bank, and before long, she was blessed with grandchildren, and eventually in April of 2024, a great grandson.

Dora is survived by her children, Todd (Michelle) Meyer and Julie (Daryl) Ties; grandchildren, Keanyn Ties, Afton (Ashden Schilling) Ties, Dylan (Mallory) Meyer, and Chayce Meyer; great-grandchild, Maverick Meyer; siblings, Jerome (Janis) Burken, Eugene (Nancy) Burken, Earl (Colleen) Burken, Judy (Larry) Farrell, Marietta Trenkamp, Elaine (Ronald) Holdgrafer, David (Kathy) Burken, Daniel (Lois) Burken, Donald (Linda) Burken, Anna (John) Lorenzen; sisters-in-law, Jeanette Durkop, Betty Burken; and brother-in-law, Elmer Miller. Dora is preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; parents, Victor and Martha Burken; brothers, Loren Burken and Leo Burken; and sister, Lois Miller.
