Donna Marie Starr was a kind person who cared about everyone and lived for her family. She passed away at the age of 73 on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Sabula, Iowa. Burial will take place in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson, Illinois. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, prior to the service at the church.
Donna was born May 2, 1940 the daughter of Robert Romanus and Bessie (Henrichsen) Culver, Sr. in Sabula, Iowa. She attended Miles High School and graduated with the Class of 1957. Donna was a beauty school graduate from the Paris Academy of Beauty in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On March 5, 1961 Donna married Lowell Lee Starr at the Sabula Calvary Lutheran Church.
Donna and Lowell moved to Thomson in 1971. She previously owned and operated Starrlite Beauty Salon out of her home in Thomson. Even though she was partially retired, Donna still continued as a hairdresser to her family and friends. Donna was a lifetime member of the Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula. She served on the Thomson Chamber of Commerce and for twenty years she served as a Thomson Library Board member. Donna enjoyed playing bingo and creating blankets, quilts and afghans as gifts for her family and friends. Donna and Lowell enjoyed traveling to various casinos on gambling trips and especially enjoyed going for motorcycle rides on their Honda Gold Wing. Most of all, Donna treasured spending time with her family and friends.
Donna will be dearly missed by her husband, Lowell; one son, Daniel Lee Starr of Thomson; two daughters, Laura Starr Rathje of Clinton and Lisa Marie Johnson of Thomson; 3 grandchildren, Tobias Lowell Johnson, Sabrina Starr Rathje and Bailey Naomi Johnson and two sisters, Doris (David) Rederer of Clinton and Darla (Bradley) Meyer of Sabula. Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Bessie and one brother, Robert Culver Jr.
