Donald E. Smith

Donald E. Smith, age 75, of Preston, Iowa, died Thursday, June 2, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at the Miller – Law – Jones Funeral Home in Preston, with Landon Becker officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 6, at Miller – Law – Jones Funeral Home, Preston. A private family burial will be held on Wednesday, June 8, at the Preston Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Russell and Ann Gerdin American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, 750 Hawkins Dr., Iowa City, Iowa, 52246.
Donald was born February 4, 1936, in Preston, Iowa, the son of Harry and Bernice (Lingle) Smith. He graduated from Preston High School. Don married Sandra Regenwether on May 26, 1958, at the Preston United Methodist Church.
Don worked for DuPont in Clinton, Iowa, for forty two years as an electrician, retiring in 1995. He was a member of the Preston United Methodist Church and a member of the Preston Fire Department for ten years. Don was an excellent woodworker and handyman who helped many family members do home repairs and projects. He enjoyed playing cards, dancing, and singing and playing the guitar in his younger years.
Don is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 53 years, Sandra Smith of Preston, Iowa; two daughters, Dena (Tom) Burmahl of Preston, and Vicki (Kevin) Becker of Dewitt, Iowa; one son, Tom (Pam) Smith of Bettendorf, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Landon (Amanda) Becker, Dane Johnson, David Johnson, Justin Smith, Cody Smith, Shawna Becker, and Tasha Becker; and three great grandchildren, Hope Becker, Brady Becker, and Karson Becker.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Russell Smith.
