It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Schott Sr, age 90, on January 25, 2023, at Mercy Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa. “He was an honorable man, leaving a loving legacy for his family.”
Born on November 28, 1932, in Marquette, Iowa, Don grew up along the Mississippi River, where his father worked on the railroad. Following in his father's footsteps, Donald spent his 32-year career working for the Milwaukee, Soo Line, and Canadian Pacific Railroads, where he was a Roundhouse Foreman in Savanna, and was known for his ability to fix any kind of problem with a diesel engine.
He is a 1950 graduate of Marquette High School and gained experience as a mechanic serving in the US Air Force during the Korean War, working on jet-engines reaching the level of Staff Sergeant for the 322nd Fighter Interceptor Squadron.
After joining the Air Force, Donald married the love of his life, Betty Fields, on October 7, 1952, in Wichita Falls, Texas. Together they raised two children, Donald Jr and Elizabeth "Carrie," and celebrated 67 years of marriage until Betty's passing in 2020.
Don was known as a natural gentleman and always patient; he and Betty supported each other’s interests, and he never left the house without a kiss. His grandchildren would say, "I hope to be like Papa," serving them as a mentor, sharing his talent and providing guidance. He enjoyed the outdoors, golfing, hunting, finding Morels, and fishing along the Mississippi River.
Don had a lifetime commitment to his faith and his family. He and Betty shared a love of their Lord and were long time members of the Church of the Open Door in Clinton, Iowa. Don will be long remembered for his dedication to his family, his unwavering work ethic, and his reputation as an old-school mechanic. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Elizabeth “Carrie” Garver of Manassas, Virginia; five grandchildren, Brianna (Josh) Becker, Jessica (Danny) Kowal, Jason (Sara) Schott, Nicholas (Jenifer) Garver and Jacob Garver; along with seven great-grandchildren, Jordan, Jayden, Sophia, Arianna, Weston, Jaylee and Kayleigh. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty; a son, Donald Jr in 2006; three brothers, Richard, William and Charles; and a sister, Lorraine.
