Donald “Don” L. Hook, age 82 of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, died on Friday, June 21, 2013 at home. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon, Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna, Illinois. Military rites will be provided by the Mt. Carroll American Legion Post #67. Cremation rites will be accorded. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 prior to the service at the funeral home.
Don was born on March 26, 1931, the son of Louis and Marguerite (Murphy) Shipma in Morrison, Illinois. He attended Mt. Carroll High School and graduated with the Class of 1949. Don married Euveta Shepherd on June 9, 1951. Don proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was a self-employed seasonal heavy equipment operator. During the winter months Don plowed snow and worked as a mechanic. He also worked for Tautz Brothers in Mt. Carroll for thirty-seven years as a heavy equipment operator, and owned and drove buses for Center Hill School.
Don was a member of the Savanna VFW Post #2223, Mt. Carroll American Legion Post #67 and Savanna Moose Lodge. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and fixing mechanical engines. He also loved gardening, antique cars, and roller skating. Most of all, Don cherished the time he spent with his family, his best friends Wylie and Eleanor Rummel and his cats.
Don is survived by his wife, Euveta of Mt. Carroll; two sons, James Hook of Mt. Carroll, Michael (JoAnn) Hook of Mt. Carroll; a daughter, Tammi Hook of Rock Falls, Illinois; one half brother, John Jorden; one step brother, Bob Shipma. Don was preceded in death by his parents; one grandchild in infancy, and three half-sisters. The family wishes to thank Don’s caregivers for the support and assistance they provided.
