Donald Funk, age 91, of Savanna, Illinois, passed away Monday, November 5, 2012, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mount Carroll, Illinois A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 8, 2012, at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the funeral service at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Private family burial of ashes will take place at Lost Mound Cemetery, Hanover, Illinois. A memorial fund has been established in Donald’s memory.
Donald was born February 12, 1921, in Savanna, Illinois, the son of Frank and Clara (Duffin) Funk. He attended Walnut Grove Country School until he began farming as a young man. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II, earning a Purple Heart during his service in Japan. On June 29, 1952, Donald married Gladys Ready in Hanover, Illinois.
Donald worked as an Ammunition Handler, and Machine Operator for the Savanna Army Depot for 35 years. He was a member of the 7th Day Adventist Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, flowers and outdoor work. He also enjoyed carpentry work-- building his own home by hand.
Donald is survived his wife, Gladys; two sons, Jack Funk of Savanna, and Dale (Carol) Funk of Greensboro, Oregon; three grandchildren, Julie (John) Brigham, Brian Wilson, and Trevor Funk; two step-grandchildren, Curtis and Jeremy; two great-granddaughters, Hannah and Nora Brigham; and one sister, Rosemary Schafer, of Savanna.
Donald was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Wilson; one sister, Frances Johns; a brother George Funk; and both parents.
