Donald (Don) Frost Caldwell, 78, of rural Mt. Carroll, died Sunday, Feb. 26 at Rockford Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place and a memorial gathering will be held from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll.
He was born March 3, 1933, in Chicago. The family moved to Lombard where he graduated from Glenbard (West) High School in Glen Ellyn. He then attended Purdue University, West Layfayette, IN, graduating in 1955. That summer he married Sheryl Rashleigh in June. He then received his MS degree in Psychology and Special Education from Peabody College. He earned his Ph.D. in Psychology from Vanderbilt University in 1960. While studying at Vanderbilt, he was asked to take part in a research project for the U.S. Army at Fort Campbell, KY. At the completion of his work, he was awarded the title of Honorary Parachutist with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell. He then spent his last year of Active Duty doing research in the primate laboratory at Walter Reed Memorial Hospital in Washington D. C.
He and his family, which now included three children moved to Detroit, MI and later moved to Huntington Woods, MI. Don worked in psychological research at the Lafayette Clinic, and taught Psychology to Medical Students at Wayne State University, both State of Michigan facilities. He and Sheryl divorced.
He continued working for the State of Michigan until his retirement in 1991. At that time he and his then-wife Cindy, moved to the family farm west of Mount Carroll. They completely renovated the house on the property. They later divorced.
Several years later he met the love of his life, Patt (Lagle) Shepherd. They were married at the First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Greg Albert on January 25, 1999. They continued to live at the family farm then moved to their current residence in 2004. Don was an avid outdoorsman especially when it came to fishing; he immensely helped his wife with their gardens; and took the role of “keeper of the lawn” very seriously. He thoroughly enjoyed his rural life in Carroll County.
Don is survived by his wife, Patt; his son Brett (Lori) Caldwell of California; a daughter, Robin Caldwell of Michigan; and another daughter, Kristin (Joe) Torres of Ohio; five grandchildren, Scott (Anna) Caldwell, Meghan Caldwell (David DeMuri) all of California, Justin Aqwa of Michigan, and Mariah and Baily Torres of Ohio; and one great granddaughter, Lili of California; a sister, Laurel of North Aurora, and a brother Richard of Texas; a brother-in-law Bill (Linda) Lagle, of Maryland and two nieces and six nephews; his “rescued” black Lab, Boomer, many friends throughout the country and his two former wives.
