Della was born December 14, 1927, in Savanna, the daughter of Charles and Ethel (Robertson) Miller. She grew up helping to farm and attending the Hickory Grove Country School. She worked at the Stransky Farms where she met the love of her life, Roy Fox. They were married May 15, 1943. Della and Roy raised four children, Lonnie, Susie, Larry and Melvin. They celebrated 72 years of marriage until Roy’s passing in 2015.
Devotion and determination are words that remind us of Della. She came from good stock, and she managed to pass that along, all the way down to great-great-grandchildren. She was proud to be part of five generations, with the youngest, just one year old. She kept young by keeping up with the young-ins. Her letters, cookies and ice cream, or just fun talks kept them close.
In her younger years, Della worked hard. Along with being a farmwife and homemaker, she waitressed at the Carroll Café and Pauley’s Café, both of Mt. Carroll. She had also worked at the Lanark Cannery. Della loved cooking for family, baking, raising flowers, gardening, and of course canning Irish pickles. She treasured every minute that she was able to spend with all of her grandchildren.
Della will be deeply missed by her children, Lonnie (Kathy) Fox of Albany, Illinois, Susie Meador of Cape Coral, Florida; and Larry (Dorothy) Fox of Central City, Iowa; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandsons; and her sister Ethel Stevens of Arlington, Washington. Della is preceded in death by her husband Roy, Son Melvin; her brothers Milford, Milton,Vernon and Chuck; and her sister Ivas Kauffman.
May she rest in peace and may the memories of her love and kindness live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
