Debra Rae Kness, a loving wife, mom, and grandma, passed away at the age of 69 on June 24, 2024, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling, Illinois. Born on April 17, 1955, in Sterling to Raymond and Josephine (Wolf) Bardell, Debra grew up in Milledgeville, Illinois, where she graduated from Milledgeville High School in 1973.
After high school, Deb enjoyed camaraderie at the Milledgeville Bowling Alley until it discontinued having leagues. She carried a 160 average. Debra met her future husband, Vernon “Bub” Kness, on a vocational bus ride during their high school years. They married on May 15, 1976, cultivating a life filled with love, mutual respect, and simplicity. They raised two children, Heather and Kyle, and celebrated 48 years of marriage.
Debra's career spanned nearly five decades at the local Ford dealership in Sterling, where she began taking payments at the window and later became a license and title clerk. She retired three years ago from Kunes Country, then remained a part-time contributor until her health began to decline.
Known affectionately as "Grandma Chocolate" by her adored grandson Killian, Debra embodied the spirit of a true matriarch. She was always prepared, whether organizing family outings or ensuring snacks and drinks were on hand. Her Saturdays were sacred, reserved for baking—filling the home with the sweet smells of her loving labor. She never missed an event, championing her children's endeavors with pride and joy. Above all, Debra cherished her role as a grandmother, relishing every moment with her grandson.
One of Debra’s favorite spots was the family cabin on the Mississippi River, north of Albany. Her time there was well spent with family and friends and very peaceful when it was just Deb and Bub. Debra's life was a testament to her caring, selfless nature and her dedication to her family. She leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion that will forever be remembered by those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Debra will be dearly missed by her husband Bub Kness of Milledgeville; her daughter, Heather (Justin) Brown of Dixon; her son, Kyle (Kayla Wilson) Kness of Lanark; a grandson Killian Brown; her father, Raymond Bardell of Milledgeville; and a sister, Sandy (Dave) Shetler of Rock Falls. Debra is preceded in death by her mother, Josephine.
A visitation will be held from 4 - 7 PM on Friday, July 5, 2024, at Law Jones Eastland in Lanark, Illinois. Her funeral service will take place at 10:30 AM on Saturday, July 6, at the funeral home.
