David Allen Stancy

June 5, 1941 — March 25, 2024

David Allen Stancy passed away on March 25, 2024. He was born in Chicago on June 5, 1941. For the first half of his life, he thought his birthday was June 6th, so his closest family members celebrated him both days.

Dave married Judith Cunningham of Oneida, NY, in 1962. They divorced in 1988 but remained friends until Judi’s passing in 2021. Together, they raised two children, Michael and Michelle.

Dave's life was as varied as it was vibrant. He served with honor in the U.S. Army, used his short stature to his advantage as a racehorse jockey and owner, and was a jeweler, earning the affectionate moniker "Diamond Dave." Later in life, he discovered a passion for pyrotechnics, becoming a self-taught fireworks expert and fostering friendships across the country within the industry.

Dave adopted Savanna as his home in the last decade of his life after many years of visiting his family on weekends. A fixture at the Frog Pond during fair weather, he could often be seen managing no fewer than two fishing poles.

His children were his lifelong favorite fishing buddies. When he wasn’t fishing, he was often shopping for deals. His knack for navigating grocery aisles with frugality was legendary, his skill in saving outweighing his spending, a talent he shared with delight to anyone who would listen.

He will be missed by his family and many friends, who take comfort in the fact that he remained independent until his death, just as he’d want. He is survived by his son, Michael (Mary) of Cortland, IL; granddaughter Jamie Murnane (Mary Regal) of Los Angeles, CA; grandson Aiden (Jessica) Letcher of Savanna, IL; great-grandchildren Dylan, Izabel, Noah, Max, Lukas; brother Edward of Chicago; sister Christine (the late Ronald) Stafiej of Heber Springs, AR; and nieces and nephews Dawn, Donna, John, Walter, Tom and Scott.

David is preceded in death by his daughter, Michelle Stancy Fredericks; former spouse and lifelong friend Judith Woosley; sister Patricia (the late Eugene) Gill; brother Walter (Sandra) Stancy; and parents Mabel and Walter Stancy.
