David Michael Millsap

October 26, 1952 — August 25, 2024

David Michael Millsap would never hesitate to lend a helping hand, he believed in hard-work and dedication. At the age of 71, he passed away at home, Sunday, August 25, 2024. He was born on October 26, 1952, in Sparta, Illinois, the son of Eugene “Gene” and Mary (Paulson) Millsap.

In his adolescent years, David moved with his family to Mt. Carroll, where he would attend Mt. Carroll High School. It was here that he discovered his passion for nature and the outdoors, leading him to volunteer and work at Palisades State Park. After graduating in 1970, David pursued higher education at Western Illinois University, where he earned a degree in Parks and Recreation. On June 30, 1979, David married Julie Temple at Point Rock Park in Mt. Carroll. They raised two sons, Michael and Craig, and celebrated 45 years of marriage.

David's career began working for Glen Smith at Smith Construction, where he quickly made a name for himself as a skilled carpenter. His expertise in the craft, whether working on a small project or a large-scale renovation, was unparalleled. In 2006, he served as the foreman for Brown Construction during the Dixon Hospital renovation, a project that showcased his leadership and meticulous attention to detail. He was known for his mantra, "Measure twice, and you'll only have to cut once," a reflection of his precision and dedication to excellence. David worked many years, side-by-side, as a partner with Dave Smith in Smith Construction.

David's talents extended beyond his professional life. He was a member of both the Mt. Carroll Jaycees and the Mt. Carroll Lions Club, where he actively participated in community service. His commitment to giving back was also evident in his volunteer work at the Savanna Historical Museum, where he generously donated his time and skills. In addition to his professional and community contributions, David was a family man. He built his own home, a sanctuary for his young family, with his own hands—an achievement that symbolized his love and commitment to those he cherished most.

David and Julie faced profound challenges in their life, particularly the loss of their son, Michael, in 1996. The strength and resilience David showed during this time was remarkable, and he continued to honor Michael's memory every day. David will be laid to rest beside his beloved son in Oak Hill Cemetery.

David is dearly missed by his wife, Julie, his son, Craig, and his brother, Larry. Though he has left this world, the mark he made on his family, friends, and community will endure. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael, and his parents, who have now welcomed him home.

On Saturday, September 7, a Celebration of David’s life will be held 1-4pm at the Savanna Moose Lodge. A private family graveside service will be held in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Memorials may be made to the Savanna Moose Lodge in David’s memory.
