Daryl J. Bormann

April 7, 1943 — September 1, 2024

Daryl J. Bormann of Miles, IA, formerly of Preston, IA, passed away Sunday, September 1, at Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford, IL. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 7, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Preston. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 6, at the church, as well as one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Miles Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

Daryl was born on April 7, 1943, son of Sylvester and Lucille (Kilburg) Bormann. He grew up in Bellevue, IA, and graduated at Marquette High School class of 1961. Daryl married the love of his life, Beverly Michel, on June 26, 1965, and together they celebrated 59 years of marriage, raising four children.

Immediately following high school, Daryl embarked on a lifelong career in carpentry. He first worked for Vic Frett in Bellevue, and at the age of 19, he began working at John L. Franks Lumber Yard in Preston. Eventually Daryl moved to the Miles location where he remained for 63 years. He eventually became the owner and retired only two years ago. Known for his tireless work ethic, Daryl worked long hours at the lumber yard and continued his carpentry work in the evenings, leaving a lasting mark on the community with his craftsmanship. Daryl was always the person friends and neighbors called when a home project needed a skilled hand. He could almost fix anything from woodworking, to plumbing, to wiring, or had friends to help.

A man of many talents, Daryl had a sharp mathematical mind and enjoyed playing Sudoku. He was a lifelong fan of the Dodgers and Cowboys, and he loved watching sports. His kids remember watching Iowa basketball games on the weekends while they were growing up. Daryl looked forward to his annual trips to Chicago to catch a baseball game with his buddies. He also enjoyed playing various card games with friends. Daryl could often be seen riding his golf cart around Miles. His pride and joy included his 1966 Mustang and tractor, which he frequently showcased in local parades.

Daryl was deeply involved in his community, serving for many years as a Preston firefighter and holding office for the department. He was also a member of The Knights of Columbus. However, Daryl’s greatest passion was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who cherished every moment spent with his loved ones.

Daryl will be dearly missed by his wife, Beverly Bormann of Miles; three children, Sheila (Brian) Whalen of Urbandale, IA, Bradley (Christi) Bormann of Urbandale, and Jason (Stacy) Bormann of Chicago; his daughter-in-law, Denise Bormann of Shannon, IL; five grandchildren, Devon (Raven) Bormann, Brendon Bormann, Jenna Whalen, Austin Bormann, and Lauren Bormann; one great-grandchild, Harper; and two sisters, Kay (Ken) Nelson of Bella Vista, AR, and Debra (Kevin) Bauer of Calamus, IA. Daryl is preceded in death by his son, Brian Bormann; his siblings, Glenn and Mary Ellen; his parents, Sylvester and Lucille; and his in-laws, Clarence and Eleanor Michel.
