Dale E. Kelly, age 87 of Preston, Iowa died Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at Mill Valley Care Center, Bellevue, Iowa. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 15, 2010 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston with Reverend Gregory Geier officiating. Burial will take place in the Preston Cemetery, Preston, Iowa. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 14, 2010 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston.
Dale was born October 22, 1922 near Preston, the son of Claude and Venona (Burns) Kelly. He attended country school and graduated from the Preston High School. Dale went on to a Radio Operator School in Bismarck, North Dakota. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1943. He served our country until November, 1945 during World War II as a Radar Operator with the 556th Signal Air Warning Battalion in the European Theatre of Operations. He was stationed in Iceland. While on leave back home, on July 23, 1944, Dale married Berdella Knief in Preston. They have celebrated 65 years.
Dale cherished the time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Preston American Legion Post #602. Dale enjoyed listening to country and big band music.
Dale worked for Clinton Corn for 19 years. He had also farmed near Preston for several years and later helped care for the Preston Cemetery.
Dale will be dearly missed by his wife, Berdella Kelly of Preston; a daughter, Sandra (Phillip) Van Wassenhove of Bettendorf, Iowa; a son, Dennis (Kathryn) Kelly of Eldridge, Iowa; a son in-law, Steven Whitmore of Maquoketa, Iowa; nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; a sister, Darlene Wipperman of Waverly, Iowa; and a brother, Donald (Joanne) Kelly of Dewitt, Iowa. Dale is preceded in death by both parents and a daughter, Donna Whitmore in 2005.
