Clyde H. Michel, of Preston, IA, passed away Thursday, November 3rd, at MercyOne Medical Center in Dubuque, IA. The visitation for Clyde will be held Saturday, November 12th at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Preston, IA from 9:00 to 10:30 am. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 am.
Clyde was born on the family farm outside of Springbrook, IA, on September 27th, 1936. He is the son of Frank and Susan Michel and was the youngest of 10 children. Clyde grew up working on the family farm and eventually he ran the farm when his older brothers joined the military.
Clyde attended St. Peter and Paul Catholic School in Springbrook. As a young man Clyde enjoyed going out to eat with friends and then dancing. On one of these fun nights Clyde met the love of his life, Charlene Steines, and they were married May 5th, 1959. Together, Clyde and Charlene raised two daughters and celebrated 63 years of marriage.
Clyde and Charlene settled in Preston where Clyde worked at the quarry. After retiring Clyde maintained the lawn at the Manor in Preston and raised/sold many vegetables from his garden. In his spare time Clyde enjoyed playing baseball, card parties, hunting, fishing, and trapping. In his older age, Clyde enjoyed getting up early to go to the casino.
At the center of Clyde’s life was his family. He was a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Family gatherings were always a joy. He was built tougher than most, having multiple illnesses/injuries including battling, and beating cancer twice. Clyde was known for his great memory and wit right up until the end.
Clyde will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Charlene Michel of Preston; two daughters, Cindy (Joe Fitzgibbon) Jessen of Des Moines, IA, and Vicky (Mike) Mommsen of Grinnell, IA; six grandchildren, Tyler (Maia) Jessen of Des Moines, Adam (Elise) Jessen of Johnston, IA, Becky (James) Glover of Prairie Village, KS, Seth (Stephanie) Mommsen of Des Moines, IA, Markel (Jordan) Mommsen of Phoenix, AZ and Kirk Mommsen of Dubuque, IA; five great grandchildren, Hayes Jessen, Noah Jessen, Elaine Jessen, Ava Jessen, and Sophia Mommsen; one brother, Lloyd (Wanda) Michel of Preston; and a sister-in-law, Joene Michel of DeWitt, IA, and many nieces and nephews.
Clyde is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Susan; and eight siblings, Leo, Leona, Harold, Lillian, Marie, Alvin, Algean, and Floyd.
