Cloy J. Coats, age 79, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, passed away at the Deaconess Medical Center on Monday, July 9, 2007 in Spokane, Washington. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 16, 2007 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll, Illinois with Reverend Robert Schubert of the Center Hill United Brethren Church officiating. Interment will be in Oak Knoll Cemetery in Sterling, Illinois. Military Rites will be accorded by the Rock Falls American Legion Post# 902 In Rock Falls, Illinois. A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 15, 2007 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll. Memorials may be given to the Center Hill United Brethren Church, 14201 U.S. Highway 52, Mount Carroll, Illinois 61053 in Cloy’s memory.
Cloy was born on December 9, 1927, the son of John and Sylvia Grace (Myers) Coats in Sterling, Illinois. Cloy lived and farmed in rural Sterling most of his life. He graduated from Milledgeville High School with the class of 1945 and then served his country in the United States Army. Cloy later completed his Journeyman Electrician Training in Clinton, Iowa. Cloy married Mary A. Hall on October 7, 1950 in Sterling. Mary passed away on November 3, 1993.
Cloy worked as an Electrician for Clinton Electrical Contractors for many years and later worked for Metform Hot Formed Products where he retired from in 1993. He was also currently employed by the Carroll Lanes Bowling Alley in Mt. Carroll, Illinois; he enjoyed helping with maintenance work at the Center Hill United Brethren Church. Cloy enjoyed tinkering in his garage, bird watching, long walks and riding motorcycles and scooters. Most of all Cloy loved spending time with his family.
Cloy will be dearly missed by five sons, Daniel M. Coats of Springfield, Illinois; Cloy J. (Teresa) Coats of Livermore, California, David A. Coats of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Jack E. (Stacy) Coats of Clinton, Iowa, and Tim L. Coats of Livermore, California; three daughters, Jan S. Coats of Mt. Carroll, Patty A. (Jeff) Lessman of Lanark, Illinois and Nancy J. (Clinton) Sewell of Clarkston, Washington; twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Wendell (Helen) Coats of Mesa, Arizona, Keith Coats of Sterling, Illinois and Lyle (Margorie) Coats of Mt. Carroll, Illinois; and one sister, June Gibbs of Polo, Illinois.
Cloy was preceded in death by his wife Mary; one grandson Eric, and one sister, Lois Coats.
