On Monday, April 27, 2026, Claudia Johnson was called to our Lord’s presence, leaving behind 76 years filled with love, laughter, service, and cherished memories.
Born on June 4, 1949, in Rossville, IL, Claudia is preceded in death by her father, Thomas W. Pruitt, mother Mary C. Pruitt, her beloved husband, Douglas E. Johnson II, and her step-mother Alberta M. Pruitt.
Claudia attended Rossville Grade School and later graduated from Rossville High School in 1967. After graduation, she attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), where she earned her Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in 1971. She then completed her Medical Technologist training at the laboratory in Lakeview Hospital in Danville, IL.
After completing her training, she worked at St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights, IL, before accepting a position with DuPont Medical specializing in laboratory analysis equipment. She continued her career with DuPont Pharmaceuticals, remaining with the company through several name changes until her retirement.
Claudia’s hobbies included sewing, stitching, reading, gardening, and playing the piano. She was especially gifted in cross-stitch, creating intricate and beautiful pieces with remarkable patience and skill. This past winter, she completed an especially challenging work she was eager to share in person with her friend’s son, Peter, a fellow cross-stitch enthusiast, during his planned visit in June.
Her love of gardening and the natural world was a constant thread throughout her life. She and her husband found great joy in tending their land, watching birds and wildlife, cooking together, and sharing their love of learning with young children through the Study Buddy program at River Ridge; an activity they enjoyed together for several years before Doug’s passing.
Claudia faithfully served her church, Elizabeth First United Methodist Church, for many years. She served on numerous committees, including several years as Treasurer. She also served as the Lay Delegate to the UMC Northern Illinois Conference, where she volunteered annually, and she contributed her time and gifts to the UMC Prairie North District Committee on Ministry. Before moving to Elizabeth, she sang in her church choir, and although she played the piano less often in recent years, music remained a meaningful part of her life.
A gentle soul, Claudia cherished the fellowship of family, friends, and her church community, drawing strength and purpose from those relationships. She embodied a spirit of service, spending countless hours with the ladies of the church preparing turkey and dressing sandwiches and full turkey dinners for parishioners and the wider community. Folks were always amazed by the sheer number of turkeys and roasters required for those meals.
Her service extended beyond the church walls. For many years, Claudia volunteered with the Elizabeth Food Basket, dedicating long hours to ensuring families in need were cared for. Even in recent months, when the work had become physically tiring, she continued to show up with quiet determination and compassion.
Adventurous by nature, Claudia loved traveling to new places and experiencing different cuisines. Together with Doug, she explored the Mediterranean, Russia, Scandinavia, Iceland, South America, and even Antarctica. These journeys deepened their bond and broadened their appreciation for the world.
Left to cherish her memory are her beloved sister, Anita L. Pruitt; brothers-in-law Greg Johnson and Jeff (Mary Beth) Johnson; stepsister, Betty Pollitt; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; along with many dear friends whose lives were brightened by her kindness, creativity, and unwavering generosity.
