Claryce L. Holmberg

October 16, 1925 — April 29, 2018

Claryce Louise Holmberg, age 92 of Lake Carroll, Illinois, died on Sunday, April 29, 2018 after a brief stay at the Carroll County Good Samaritan Society, Mt. Carroll. Cremation Rites have been accorded. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 5, 2018 at the Lanark United Methodist Church, Lanark, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Lanark United Methodist Church or the American Red Cross in Claryce’s memory.

Claryce was born on October 16, 1925, the daughter of Walter and Leona (Palter) Holmberg in Chicago, Illinois. She attended Hyde Park High School in Chicago and graduated with the Class of 1942. She later attended Chicago Teachers College, graduating in 1946. Claryce earned her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Illinois in 1949. She then went on to earn her doctorate degree from Springfield College in Massachusetts.

Claryce taught Physical Education for the Chicago Public School District for over twenty years. In 1970, Claryce taught Physical Education and coached basketball, volleyball, and tennis for Sauk Valley Community College, until retiring in 1980. In her younger years, Claryce worked at Tamarak Day Camp in Lincolnshire, Illinois, continuing until 2015. She loved children and helped teach them to play sports and learn to swim. Claryce became a resident of Lake Carroll in 1991. Lake Carroll was more than just a place to live; it was an extension of her family. She was named “Volunteer of the Year” at Lake Carroll and was a key member in the planning and construction of the Lake Carroll pool. Claryce volunteered her time and was recognized as an “Outstanding Volunteer” by the American Red Cross. Claryce enjoyed painting and attending theater with her family and friends. She also enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears. Most of all, Claryce cherished spending time with her family and friends, and her dog, Baxter.

Claryce will be dearly missed by her brother, Walter Holmberg, Jr. of Bettendorf, Iowa; four nieces and nephews, Scott Holmberg of Lyndon, Illinois, Walter Holmberg III of Prophetstown, Illinois, Cheri (Bruce) Rhodes of Lake Ozark, Missouri, and Gene (Linda) Holmberg of Bettendorf; five great nieces and nephews, Katelyn Rhodes, Kyle Rhodes, Kimberly (Chapman) Arter, Shannon Holmberg, and Erika Holmberg; and four great-great nieces and nephews, Lilly Drake, Xander Whitton, Ethan Arter, and Maxwell Arter; and her neighbor, Mike Vidinich. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister in-law, Marlene Holmberg.
