Christel C. Kummer, age 83, of Apple River, Illinois, passed away Sunday, October 16, 2016 at the Elizabeth Nursing Home in Elizabeth, Illinois. A funeral mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday October 22 at the Catholic Church of St. Mary in Elizabeth. Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery directly after the church service. Memorials may be given to F.H.N. Hospice in Christel’s memory.
Christel was born on February 21, 1933 in Ludwigsdorf, Germany. Christel was the daughter of Franz and Margarete (Kania) Roderfeld. She attended Neurode Schlesien Schools in Germany and later attended college classes in the United States. Christel married the love of her life Alfred F. Kummer on April 21, 1956 at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Chicago, Illinois. Alfred passed away at home on November 8, 2009.
Christel originally worked as a Manager at Prudential Insurance Company for six years. Once married, Christel became a devoted loving wife and mother; cherishing her family very much. Christel also volunteered her time with DuPage County Health Department helping many families in need while working at the Professional Pre-school in Bensenville, Illinois for a number of years as a teacher and Assistant Program Director. There she was able to educate and partake in the development of young children giving her much joy. Christel was an expert at knitting; making many beautiful things for her family, friends and others. She was also an avid reader and gardener.
Christel will be lovingly remembered by her two sons, Craig (Lori) Kummer of Skokie, Illinois and Jeff (Karen) Kummer of Roselle, Illinois; one daughter, Julie (Stephen) Caspar of Ankeny, Iowa; four granddaughters, Jamie (Blake) Rowley, Christl, Candice, and Liz; one great-granddaughter Lucy; and two sisters Ingeborg (Robert) Wood of Vancouver, Washington and Margarete (Hubertus) Starp of Germany.
Christel is preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; and one sister, Catherine.
