Charlie Shepherd, age 84 of Savanna, Illinois, died on March 6, 2012 at the Carroll County Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mount Carroll. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 10, 2012 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service. A visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 10, 2012 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. A memorial fund has been established in Charlie’s memory.
Charlie was born on June 27, 1927, the son of Charlie and Cindy (Whittaker) Shepherd in Roxana, Kentucky. He was raised in Kentucky and later honorably served his country in the United States Army. Charlie married Louise Patrick on August 14, 1954 in a Baptist Church in Virginia.
After Charlie was discharged he began working in the coal mines in and around Letcher County, Kentucky. He and his wife, Louise moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1954, where began working for Loyola University, Chicago as the head groundskeeper. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in Savanna and retired to Savanna in 1995. Charlie loved to fish and enjoyed giving it away to his family and friends even more. Most of all, Charlie treasured spending time with his family and friends.
Charlie will be dearly missed by his wife, Louise; three sons, Gale (Rene) Shepherd of Chicago, Jimmy (Bonnie) Shepherd of Chicago and Charlie (Dee) Shepherd of Savanna; one daughter, Janice (Chester) Pasiewicz of Chicago; ten grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and one sister, Minnie Shepherd of Los Angeles, California. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Minnie Carraro; one brother, Elmer Shepherd and one sister, Leola Koch.
God saw the road was getting rough, The hill was hard to climb;
He gently closed those tired eyes And whispered “Peace Be Thine.”
The weary hours, the days of pain, The sleepless nights have passed;
The ever present worn-out frame Has found sweet rest at last.
