Charles Vinton Gilbert

Charles Vinton Gilbert, age 94, passed away, Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. Cremation Rites have been accorded. A Graveside Service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday May 5, 2012, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll, Illinois with Reverend Nancy Wilkinson of the Community United Church of Christ, Savanna officiating. Military Rites will be accorded by the Savanna V.F.W. Post#2223.
Charlie was born on August 28, 1921, the son of Charles M. and Belva Marie (Niday) Gilbert in Evanston, Illinois. He attended Evanston schools until the family moved to Savanna in 1939 where he graduated from Savanna Township High School. Charlie served in the U.S. Army during World War II (1942-1946) in the 381st Infantry 96th Division in the Philippine and South Pacific Theaters, achieving the rank of Tech Sergeant. He was awarded the Purple Heart in the battle for Okinawa, Japan. Upon returning home from the war, he met the “love of his life” Olive Viola Roberts in Savanna. Their first date was spent visiting the Palisades State Park at the fountain. Charlie and Olive were married December 18, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois.
Charlie worked in Ammunition and Demolition at the Savanna Army Depot for thirty years, retiring in 1973. He was a member of the Savanna American Legion Post #148, a life-time member of the Hanover VFW Post#5300 and a longtime member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1095, Savanna. He enjoyed feeding and watching birds, hunting, traveling and fishing for Walleye Trout in Canada. Charlie was an avid sports fan, especially following the Chicago Cubs and Bears.
Charlie is survived by his best friend and loving wife of sixty-five years, Olive of Savanna; a niece, Carol (Jesse) Bundy; great nephew, Michael Bundy; great niece, Lynn Murphy and seven great-great nieces and nephews. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Betty (Albert) Handel.
