Cathy Corey was very giving, funny, determined, opinionated and sometimes bossy. You might call her a firecracker. At the age of 69, Cathy passed away Sunday, October 15, 2023 at home in the care of her family and Mercy Hospice. She had been a lifelong resident of Savanna. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held 4 – 6pm Thursday, October 19, 2023 at Law Jones Funeral Home, Savanna followed by a service at 6pm.
Cathy was born October 6, 1954 in Savanna, the daughter of Eleanor (Dyson) and James Moore. She grew up in the Chestnut Park neighborhood in Savanna. She is a 1972 graduate of Savanna High School. At the age of 17, Cathy had a daughter, Charlotte Corey. Charlotte was always her priority. Cathy made life fun and treated Charlotte’s friends just like her own. When her grandchildren were born, life changed for Cathy, she spent as much time as possible with Matthew and Corey.
Cathy also found her soulmate, Duce Dyson. They have been companions for over 22 years. She enjoyed travelling to places like Florida and Las Vegas. Cathy always wanted a palm tree in her yard to remind her of Florida. She worked at several places through the years and had a great love for animals. She ran a dog grooming business for several years called Awesome Pawsome Kutz. She also had worked as a dispatcher at a taxi company, Alco in Savanna, then Elkay, and Big Meadows Nursing Home.
Cathy was always a dear friend, showing up and staying in touch with her besties. She wasn’t afraid to go against the grain, proving this by rooting for the Packers and Cardinals. Her favorite things included dogs, palm trees, the old Savanna-Sabula bridge, spending time with friends and family, and cracking a good joke. Her lively spirit will be missed by many.
Cathy is survived by her companion, Duce Dyson; her daughter, Charlotte (Randy) Johnston; her two grandchildren, Matthew and Corey; her sister, Patty Jo Derrickson; her half-sister, Raylene Wright; three stepsons, Bryan, Adam and Cody Dyson; many nieces and nephews; and three lifelong friends, Cheri, Patty and Sharon. She is preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Colleen “Chopper” Terry; and her brother, Jimmy.
