Catherine E. Burken

Catherine E. Burken, age 91, of Preston, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at the Alverno Care Center, Clinton, Iowa. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 6, 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Preston with Father Paul Lippstock as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Sugar Creek. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 5, 2009 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Preston with a rosary service at 7:00 p.m.. Catherine was born on April 6, 1917, the daughter of John and Katherine (Berding) Burken in Sugar Creek, Iowa. She attended St. Joseph School in Sugar Creek. She was a devout Catholic and attended mass regularly and continued to attend mass at the Alverno Care Center.
Catherine worked at the Garment Factory in Clinton, Iowa, until she retired to take care of her older sister. Family was the most important thing to Catherine. She was kind hearted and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Catherine enjoyed playing cards, crocheting and playing Bingo.
Catherine is survived by her sister in-law, Arletta Burken; and four generations of nieces and nephews.
Catherine is preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers and four sisters. Memorials may be given to a charity of the donor’s choice in Catherine’s memory.
