Carroll L. Ruchotzke, age 78, of Miles, Iowa, died Sunday, March 7, 2010 at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport, Iowa. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula, Iowa, with Reverend Robert Krueger officiating. Burial will be in Miles Cemetery, Miles. A Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established in Carroll’s memory.

Carroll was born on September 27, 1931, the son of Leo and Caroline (Thielen) Ruchotzke, south of Miles. He attended country school and graduated from Preston High School with the Class of 1950. Carroll was confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Preston, Iowa, and later married Mardella Koch on December 16, 1951 in the church. Carroll was stationed in Berlin, Germany and served his country in the United States Army during the Korean conflict from August 1952 until June 1954.

Carroll was a dairy and hog farmer for eight years north of Preston, Iowa, and for an additional forty-three years near Sabula, Iowa, retiring to Miles in 2009. He belonged to D.H.I.A., served a term on the church council and was also a member of the Preston American Legion. Carroll was a caretaker of Canada Hollow Cemetery near Sabula. He loved to play cards and always had a joke to tell. Carroll was friends with everyone he met.

Carroll will be deeply missed by his wife, Mardella of Miles, Iowa; two sons, Daniel (Cindy) Ruchotzke of Rochester, Minnesota and Gene (Janet) Ruchotzke of Sabula, Iowa; three daughters, Karen (Linwood) Swartzendruber of Ankeny, Iowa, Linda Ruchotzke of Iowa City, Iowa and Betty (James) Sieverding of Bellevue, Iowa; six grandsons; four granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, John (Madge) Ruchotzke of Grinnell, Iowa and Louis (Linda) Ruchotzke of Preston, Iowa; two sisters, Caroline Behn of Preston, Iowa and Cleo (Don) Gray of Preston, Iowa, one brother-in-law, Richard Eggers of Teeds Grove, Iowa; and one sister-in-law, Dona Ruchotzke of Tucson, Arizona.

Carroll was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Hugo Ruchotzke; one sister, Leola Eggers; and one brother-in-law, Wes Behn.
