Carolyn Kazakos

April 18, 1961 — March 19, 2020

Carolyn Kazakos, age 58, of Freeport, IL passed away Thursday, March 19th, 2020 at PA Peterson Nursing Home, Rockford, IL from an extended illness. A private service will be held Tuesday, March 24th, at Savanna Township Cemetery, Savanna, IL. A Celebration of Life will be announced and held at a later date.

Carolyn was born April 18th, 1961, to Albert and Helen Ehringer. Carolyn grew up in Savanna, IL, graduated from Savanna High School and went on to obtain a nursing degree from Highland Community College. Carolyn met the love of her life, John Kazakos, while working as a nurse in Freeport, IL. The couple married May 24, 1986 and started their family.

Family was always Carolyn’s first priority. Not only did she love caring for her children and husband, but she also had an overflowing love for her pets. Carolyn’s passion for pets and caring nature also extended to animals in need. Carolyn and her family couldn’t say no when it came to an animal in need so they enjoyed the company of a variety of pets. Once while fishing with her son, Carolyn brought home a fish they had caught together and kept it as a pet, rather than eating or releasing it.

Carolyn was active in multiple organizations that supported families with children dealing with cancer such as the Candlelighters and Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. This was a cause that was especially near and dear to Carolyn’s heart.

Carolyn worked many years as a nurse, both at nursing home facilities and major hospitals until 2013 when her illness required her to stay at home.

Carolyn loved spending time with her family. They enjoyed riding on their motorcycles, fishing and hunting at the family farm, camping at the KOA with family, and actively following the family’s Greek heritage.

Family was truly most important, and the primary joy of her life. Regardless how you knew Carolyn, it was evident what a genuine, caring person she was.

Carolyn will be dearly missed by her husband, John Kazakos; children, Paul Kazakos (fiancé Sara Mulvihill, future Granddaughter Scarlett), and Kayla Kazakos; sisters, Cindy (Mark) Bertuli, and Patty (Bill) McKenna; many nieces/great niece and nephews/great nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Helen Ehringer, sister, Kathy Carlson, and brother-in-law Michael Carlson.

Due to the length of her illness, if friends desire; the family is requesting donations towards the cost of the funeral versus flowers.
