Carol Jean Highstrom, age 72 of Preston, Iowa, died on Monday, July 27, 2015 at her home. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 31, 2015 at Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Sabula. A visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, July 30, 2015 at Calvary Lutheran Church. A memorial fund has been established in Carol’s memory.
Carol was born on August 9, 1942, the daughter of Orville and Alma (McClelland) McDaniel in Clinton, Iowa. She married Delbert “Hans” Highstrom on October 26, 1960 in Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula. Hans died on September 29, 2008.
Carol began working at the Jackson County Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide and worked there for several years. After leaving the hospital, Carol continued helping people and began working as an in-home private care aide. Carol was a longtime member of Calvary Lutheran Church. She and her husband, Hans were inseparable until his sudden death in 2008. They loved annually travelling to Gulfport, Mississippi and spending time together camping along the Mississippi River. She enjoyed going on the riverboats and indulging in sweets, especially cake. Carol enjoyed her black labs and spending time outdoors, especially sitting on a beach and soaking up the sun. Most of all, Carol cherished spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends.
Carol will be dearly missed by her daughter, Rhonda (Drew) Marlowe of Charlotte, Iowa; a son, Mike Highstrom of Preston; three grandchildren, Leo Marlowe, Amber (Jamie) Busch and Megan (Nick) Graves; four great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Mason, Kinsley and Koltyn; one brother, Gary (Bethany) McDaniel of Clinton; one sister, Elaine VanDyke of Clinton, and one sister-in-law, Carolyn McDanel of Clinton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Carol was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hans; an infant son; one brother, Orian; and one sister, Barb Young.
