Carol L. Eckelberg, age 91, of Spragueville, Iowa, died Thursday, February 26, 2009, at home. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at the Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home Preston, Iowa with Deacon Bob Head officiating. Burial will be in Spragueville Cemetery, Spragueville. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday March 2, 2009 and an hour prior to the service at the Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Preston, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established in Carol’s memory.

Carol was born on May 24, 1917, in Maquoketa, Iowa, the daughter of Clem and Opal (Griffin) Riedinger. She attended Cod Fish Hollow Rural Schools, Maquoketa High School graduating in 1934. She later attended Nurses training at Jane Lamb Hospital in Clinton, Iowa. On November 23, 1938 Carol married Fredrick “Fritz” Eckelberg. Fritz died May 4, 1982. Carol worked at Meinertz Cheese Factory in Preston, and Central Steel in Clinton. Carol also farmed with her husband near Preston until retirement.

Carol was a former County President of the 4H Girls Club of Jackson County. She enjoyed crafts, needlework, baking, fishing, traveling to Canada with her husband to go on fishing trips, reading romance novels, playing euchre, barn dances, and helping at the Extension Service at the Jackson County Fair. But most of all she loved the time she spent with her friends and family.

Carol is survived by three daughters, Judy (Jerry) Elmegreen of Monmouth, Iowa, Jean Zumwalt of Spragueville, Janet (Marvin) Mohr of Maquoketa; son, Dave (Janice) Eckelberg of Medical Lake, Washington; twelve grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; and three great great grandchild; and sister in-law, Arlene Riedinger of La Jolla, California.
