Carl V. Norpel, age 85, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois passed away Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at the Edgewater Care Center, Kerrville, Texas. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at the SS John and Catherine Catholic Church, Mt.Carroll with Father Dennis Atto as Celebrant. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at SS John and Catherine Catholic Church.

Carl was born June 7, 1924 in Bellevue, Iowa the son of Floyd and Letty (Lundin) Norpel. Carl served in the United States Navy as a Seabee during World War II. After the war, Carl entered the New Mellery Abbey, serving as a Brother for nearly fifteen years. On June 26, 1968 Carl married Betty Beyers. During the 1970’s Carl and Betty operated the Norpel Shoe Store. Betty passed away on July 15, 1990. Carl married Eleanor Pessman on October 11, 1991 in Mt. Carroll. Carl and Eleanor enjoyed spending the winters in Florida and traveling. Eleanor passed away on January 12, 2004.

He worked as a Cargill Sales Representative. Carl was a member of SS John and Catherine Catholic Church. He enjoyed bike riding, walking, collecting Lionel Trains and spending time with his family.

Carl is survived by two sisters, Alice Vick and Janet (John) McLean both of Houston, Texas; four-step daughters, Marcia (Curt) Merchant of Lanark, Illinois, Audrey Smith of Freeport, Illinois, Pam (Jack) Berg of Grand Rapids, Minnesota and Diana Mis of Caro, Michigan; several step-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Betty (Beyers) Norpel and his wife Eleanor (Pessman) Norpel; a sister, Arleen Norpel; and a brother, Kenneth Norpel.
