Carl John Handel, Sr., age 90, of Savanna, Illinois, died Thursday, June 17, 2010 at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport, Illinois. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church with Reverend Philip Bigelow officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peters Cemetery. Visitation will be 10:00-11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given Carl’s honor to the St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Savanna.
Carl was born October 13, 1919 on the family farm in Savanna Township, the son of Homer and Mary (Millerschone) Handel. He was educated in Savanna Schools. On October 11, 1947 he married Georgiana Wurster at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, rural Savanna.
Carl farmed all of his life near Savanna. He also spent a year in Las Cruces, New Mexico at New Mexico University experimenting by growing different varieties of Cotton. In 1967 he designed and built his own home and in 1973 he helped design and construct the parsonage for St. Peters Evangelical Lutheran Church, Savanna. He was a member of St. Peters Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday school and served as a past president of the church council. Carl also was a past director of Carroll County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing, hunting, gardening and morel mushroom hunting.
Carl will be dearly missed by his wife, Georgiana of Savanna; a daughter, Cheryl (John) Laatsch of Jefferson, Wisconsin; two sons, John Carl (Henrietta) Handel of Rockwood, Illinois and Carl John (Patricia) Handel, Jr. of Blue Mound, Illinois; six grandchildren, Diane (Jon) Erdman of Kennesaw, Georgia, Sharon Laatsch of Janesville, Wisconsin, Janet Laatsch of Wauwalosa, Wisconsin, Logan Joel Handel of Rockwood, Illinois and Jacob and Jessica Handel of Blue Mound, Illinois and one great granddaughter, Grace Erdman of Kennesaw, Georgia.
Carl is preceded in death by his parents.
