Carl G. Carlson, age 91, of Savanna, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 22, 2018 at the Community United Church of Christ, Savanna. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial of ashes will take place at a later date. Memorials may be made in Carl’s memory to the Community United Church of Christ in Savanna.
Carl was born September 14, 1926, the son of Gus and Beulah (Suct) Carlson in Washington Township, Carroll County, Illinois. At a young age, his mother passed away, Carl was then raised by his grandfather, and later his older sister, Betty. Carl proudly served his country in the United States Marines during World War II, where he was stationed in China. On August 3, 1960, Carl married Ruth (Lisk) Resel in Elizabeth, Illinois.
Carl was a self-taught Tool & Die Maker for Fabricators in Savanna and for the Savanna Army Depot. He later became supervisor of the Model Shop at the Depot until retiring in 1987. Carl was a member of the Community United Church of Christ in Savanna, where he had served on the Church Board. He enjoyed fishing, camping, building, and fixing everything around the house.
Carl will be dearly missed by his wife of 57 years, Ruth; two children, Don (Lorraine) Resel of Clinton, Iowa and Cathy (Dennis) Johnson of Lanark, Illinois; three granddaughters, Stacy (Shawn) Taylor, Luanne Resel and Katie (Andy) Bergman; seven great-grandchildren, Carlee, Zachary, Haley, Kayla, Violet, Ruby and Harry, and one great-great-granddaughter, Ava.
Carl is preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Beulah; one granddaughter, Stephanie Resel in 1975; two sisters, Betty Carthew and Ida Potter, and one brother, Glen Koser.
