Captain Paul A. Cucullu passed away at age 92 on August 23, 2012. Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Mildred Fernandez Cucullu, Paul was the son of the late Paul George and Jeanne Cucullu, and brother of the late Joy Raymond. He graduated from Warren Easton High School, New Orleans. In WWII Paul served with the U.S. Merchant Marine in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean – Middle East theaters. He piloted ships to and from the Gulf of Mexico for 32 years with the Associated Branch Pilots. Daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Gregory Serwich, evacuated Paul and Mildred to Illinois after Hurricane Katrina had flooded their home. Paul also was the father of the late Wayne Cucullu, father-in-law of Bonnie Geers Cucullu, proud grandfather of Erin and Brian Cucullu, and Shannon and Michael Serwich (wife Blanca Apodaca), and great-grandfather of Melody Serwich. Known for his kindness and humor, Paul will be deeply missed in Louisiana, Illinois and elsewhere. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church of St. Mary in Elizabeth, IL at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2012 and interment will be in Metairie, LA.
