Betty was born July 30, 1924 at home in Savanna, the daughter of George and Clarabel (McWorthy) Smith. She was a 1942 graduate of the Savanna High School (the last one). On November 26, 1942, Betty married Edward “Ed” Speck. They raised two daughters, Linda and Melody, and celebrated 41 years of marriage before Ed’s passing in 1984.
Betty was a homemaker until her daughters were grown, then she went to work as a bookkeeper for several businesses in town including Tiny’s Discount, Savanna Electric, Corey’s Gas, Savanna Chiropractic Center, and the Community Church. She was a 50-year member of the Women of the Moose, member of the Red Hatters, and a previous Wa-Tan-Ye member. She participated in the Shriner’s 3-wheelers with her husband, Ed.
Betty loved gathering with family and friends during all the holidays, and especially birthdays. She loved to decorate and help make the time together special. She also liked to dance, golf, baking, going camping, Ballas’ pizza, a good fish-fry, a glass of wine, and breakfast was her favorite meal. “There wasn’t much that Betty didn’t like!!” She was a good provider for her family and liked to help others.
Betty will be dearly missed by her two daughters, Linda (Harry) Grissinger and Melody (Bob) Charneski, all of Savanna; two granddaughters, Cindy and Tammy Charneski; five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Haley, Shelby, James and Emily; a great-great-granddaughter, Scarlette; a niece, Vickie Thulen; and a nephew, Rickie Young. Betty is preceded in death by a daughter in infancy, Carol Jean; and a sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis (Eugene “Dick”) Young.
