Betty Lou May, age 74, of Savanna, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at Mercy Rockford Memorial Hospital, Rockford, Illinois. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna with Pastor Robert Bridges of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Burial will take place in Savanna Township Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, January 13, 2017 at the funeral home.
Betty was born April 5, 1942, the daughter of George and Vera (Nehrkorn) Handel. She attended Savanna High School. Betty worked for Strutcos in Freeport and National Lock & Eaton Corp. She also worked for 20 years at Swiss Colony. On May 26, 1973, Betty married the love of her life Harold L. May, they celebrated 39 years together. Harold passed away January 26, 2012.
Betty was a member of the Moose in Savanna, she was also a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. She enjoyed camping, horseback riding, embroidering, crocheting and reading. Most of all, Betty cherished the time she spent with her family especially her grandchildren.
Betty is survived by her three children, Allen May of Savanna, Teresa (Robert) Wagner of Freeport, Illinois, Michael (Amy) May of Lena, Illinois; three grandchildren and a sister, Sandra (Lester) Coers of Savanna. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; a son at birth; sister, Mary Heffelfinger; a brother-in-law; and all of her grandparents.
