Betty F. Flies, age 88, of Fulton, Illinois, formerly of Thomson and Hanover, Illinois, died Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at the Eagle Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Clinton, Iowa. Cremation rites will be accorded. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 24th, 2010 at the United Methodist Church, Hanover, Illinois.
Betty was born September 15, 1921, in Browerville, Minnesota, the daughter of Raleigh Albert and Luella May (Sanborn) Murphy. She attended Winona High School in Winona, Minnesota. Betty married Joseph F. Flies February 14, 1940, in Wabasha, Minnesota. Together they owned and operated many restaurants in the Savanna and Hanover area and a restaurant in Kellogg, Minnesota. Betty also worked for the Savanna Army Depot.
Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Savanna, the VFW Auxiliary Post 5300 in Hanover, the American Legion Auxiliary in Thomson, Illinois, was a past member of the Women of the Moose in Savanna, and worked for the Tri – County Opportunities Council for nine years from 1990 to 1999. Betty enjoyed fishing, including ice fishing, cooking, and baking, especially pies. Most importantly, Betty cherished the time she was able to spend with her family.
Betty is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband Joseph F. Flies of Fulton, Illinois; one daughter, Virginia (Bill) Haas of Fulton, Illinois; two sons, Richard (Kathi) Flies of Williamstown, Vermont, and Joseph F. (Cris) Flies Jr. of Naperville, Illinois; eleven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren; three sisters in – law, Margaret Hilleshiem of Kellogg, Minnesota, Diane Flies of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Shirley Flies of St. Paul; and many nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; one son, James Flies; five sisters, Delsie, Lucille, Pearl, Ellen, and Edna; and six brothers, Asa, Irwin, Alva, Martin, Harold, and Robert.
