Berneta Curtis

Berneta Curtis had a strong faith in life, she read her Bible every morning and trusted the Lord Jesus as her Savior. At the age of 103, Berneta passed into the Arms of God on Saturday, January 2, 2016 from Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna, Illinois. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna with Reverend Sejoon Jang officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover. Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., one hour prior to the service at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna.
Berneta was born December 11, 1912 in Elizabeth, Illinois, the daughter of Oscar and Amelia (Mensmer) Hancock. She attended country school and was raised in Guilford Township (the Galena Territory.) On December 11, 1930, Berneta married LaVerne Curtis at Freeport, Illinois. They farmed many years near Derinda Center and raised their family. LaVerne passed away in 1981. They celebrated 51 years together.
Berneta worked at Eaton Corporation in Hanover for many years and also the Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. She was a member of the Savanna United Methodist Church and the Savanna Moose. In younger years, Berneta enjoyed horseback riding. She also liked to garden, dance, listen to country music, and most of all she loved family time.
Berneta will be dearly missed by her daughter, Kay Ryniewicz of Elmhurst, Illinois; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Hanson of Sherburn, Minnesota. Berneta is preceded in death by her husband LaVerne in 1981; three children, Leland Curtis in 1951, Violet Handel in 2006 and Virgil Curtis in 2011; and a granddaughter, Sandra Curtis in 2015.
