Bernard “Bernie” P. Trenkamp, age 99, of Preston, Iowa, died December 25, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa. A funeral mass will be held 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Preston. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Preston. A visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, December 29, 2014, at the church. A rosary service will be held at 3:30 p.m. prior to the visitation. A memorial fund has been established in Bernard’s memory.
Bernie was born December 16, 1915, in rural Clinton County, Iowa, to Henry and Christina (Banowetz) Trenkamp. On June 5, 1939, Bernie married Correna Keller at St. Joseph’s Church in Sugar Creek, Iowa. Correna died on December 30, 2005, in Clinton.Bernie was a great community volunteer, and hauled commodities for Preston, Miles, and Sabula. He farmed around the area for many years, beginning in 1931.
Bernie was a longtime and loyal member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Preston. He served as the cemetery sexton since the mid-1960’s and, with music being a big part of his life, he sang at mass for many years. He was skilled in playing various instruments and was able to play the piano, organ, guitar, accordion, and harmonica. He also enjoyed fishing and having early morning coffee downtown with his brothers and friends. Most of all, Bernie loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Bernie will be dearly missed by his children, Stephen (Doris) Trenkamp of Preston, James (Jean) Trenkamp of Preston, Richard (Cherylee) Trenkamp of Lombard, IL, and Anna (Ferdinand) Klamik of Riverside, IL; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Roling of Preston; and three brothers, Raymond of Preston, Leo of Preston, and Edward of Preston. Bernie was preceded in death by his wife, Correna; his parents; sisters, Caroline Empen, Marie Feller, Wilhelmina Feller, Theresa Bachman, Kate Henningsen, Eva Knudsen; brothers, John “Jack”, August, Angel, Bill, Jim, Joe, Henry, and Frank.
