Bernie was born May 16, 1931 in Thomson, Illinois, the son of Charles and Katie (Eisenhower) Hartman. He was raised on the farm and attended the Ideal Country School until entering high school at Thomson. In 1947, his family moved to the Lanark area to farm, and Bernie graduated with the Class of 1949 at the Lanark High School. On November 10, 1951, Bernie married Lois Moore at the Church of the Brethren Parsonage in Lanark. They raised six children and celebrated sixty-four years of marriage.
Bernie raised livestock and farmed all his life. He enjoyed trucking the livestock and continued trucking for other farmers for many years. He also drove a courier route for Purolator Courier Company. His favorite pastime was hanging out at the sale barn and talking with friends. He enjoyed any time he could get a good deal, weather he was buying, or selling, livestock, tractors or cars. He liked a good game of Euchre with friends and family. Bernie had a fondness for Pug dogs and always kept one in the house.
Bernie will be dearly missed by his wife, Lois at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mt. Carroll; six children, Ronald Hartman of Milledgeville, Jerry (Sheila) Hartman of Mt. Carroll, Tom Hartman of Lanark, Peggy (Bill) Brown of Milledgeville, Mike (Darci) Hartman of Milledgeville and Lavonne (Scott) Sturtevant of Lake Carroll; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and his twin sister, Bernice Kruse of Oregon, Illinois.
