Benjamin Emil Highstrom, age 66, of Sabula, Iowa, died on Thursday, October 22, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa. Cremation rites will be accorded. A memorial visitation will be held on Monday, October 26, 2009, from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. at the Law - Jones Funeral Home in Sabula. A graveside service will follow at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 26, at the Evergreen Cemetery in Sabula, with Reverend Robert Krueger of Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula, officiating. A memorial has been established in Emil’s name.
Emil was born on October 19, 1943, in Sabula, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Janette (Johnson) Highstrom. He graduated from Sabula High School with The Class of 1961. Emil worked as a mechanic for McEleney Motors in Clinton, Iowa, the Milwaukee Railroad, and retired from Dupont.
Emil was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Sabula, Duck’s Unlimited, and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Emil is survived by his son Ben E. (Mary) Highstrom Jr. of Savanna, Illinois; three grandchildren, Jacob Highstrom, Aston Kemp, and Nathan Baker; one brother, Dennis (Brenda) Highstrom of Sabula, Iowa; one sister - in - law, Carol Highstrom of Preston, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
Emil was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Delbert “Hans” Highstrom.
