Benson E. Dayboll, age 87, of Thomson, Illinois, died Monday, April 13, 2009, at Four Seasons Living Center, Morrison, Illinois. A Funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Thomson, Illinois. Burial will follow in the Lower York Cemetery, Thomson with military rites accorded by the Thomson American Legion Post Donald Ashpole #1025. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Friday, April 17, 2009 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Thomson. A memorial fund has been established in Benson’s memory.
Ben was born on March 27, 1922, the son of John and Victoria (Hill) Dayboll in Grantham Township, Ontario, Canada. He was shot and wounded while serving in the Canadian Army during World War II and was discharged on May 12, 1945. Ben met his future wife, Eleanor W. Clugston while he was recovering and they were married on April 18, 1946 in Welland, Ontario. Ben became a citizen of the United States on November 1, 1956. Eleanor died July 8, 1987 in Monroe, Wisconsin.
Ben farmed his entire life, starting as a farmhand and eventually owning his own farm. He loved everything about farming, from tinkering on the farm to growing crops, and milking dairy cows. Ben sold a portion of his farm, built a home and retired in 1992. He was a member of the Thomson American Legion Post Donald Ashpole #1025. He enjoyed attending Thrashing Day Celebrations, gardening and mowing. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Ben is survived by his daughter, Barbara “Bobbi” (Steven) Kaufman of Thomson, Illinois; a granddaughter, Melinda “Mindy” Kaufman of Thomson; one sister, Myrtle Szalagyi of Canada; and several nieces and nephews.
Ben was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; Eleanor; six brothers and one sister.
