Bascom Hunt, age 75, of Savanna, Illinois, died Friday, December 9, 2016, at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, December 15, 2016 in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Savanna.
Bascom was born January 6, 1941 in Pittsboro, Kentucky, the son of Jonas and Thelma (Burchett) Hunt. He was raised in a Kentucky coal mine town. On October 14, 1961, Bascom married Linda Rae Ford in Wabash, Indiana. They raised three children and celebrated 48 years of marriage. Linda passed away in Springfield, Missouri in 2009.
Bascom proudly served his country in the United States Army for 17 years. His time in the service took him through three tours of duty in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot, where he was shot down in flight three times. He was then transferred to the 1st Armored Division, and finished his service as a Tank Commander. Bascom and Linda moved to Savanna in 1977. He drove truck for eight years, and was also a security guard at the Quad City Nuclear Plant for 17 years until his retirement in 2008. He enjoyed fishing on the Mississippi, doing crossword puzzles, and especially spending time with his family.
Bascom will be dearly missed by one son, Ronald (Laura) Hunt of Mt. Carroll, Illinois; one daughter, Tamara (Michael) Robertson of Savanna; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gary (Linda) Hunt, and Tommy Hunt, both of Texas; two sisters, Loretta (John) Dillon and Linda, both of Lagro, Indiana. Bascom is preceded in death by his wife, Linda, one son, Terry, and his parents, Jonas and Thelma.
