Barbara J. Couch, 77, passed away at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 2015 in Savanna, Illinois after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. To honor Barb’s life, a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the United Methodist Church, 222 12th Avenue in DeWitt, Iowa with the Reverend Tom Boomershine presiding. Friends and family may gather after for remembrances at 3:30 p.m. at the Whisk Away Café, 919 6th Avenue, DeWitt.
Barb was born on August 15, 1938 in Freeport, Illinois to Robert and Dorothy Carroll. She was raised in Thomson, Illinois where she graduated salutatorian from York Community High School, and then completed a business certificate at the American Business School in Davenport, Iowa. Barb was united in marriage to William Couch, an insurance executive, on July 4, 1963, and they worked and raised their family in DeWitt, Iowa until Bill passed away in 1981.
Barbara worked as a homemaker and later in life was employed as an executive administrative assistant at a law firm and insurance companies in Denver, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. Barb eventually settled in Phoenix, Arizona to be near her family and attend her grandchildren’s functions, and teach them the secrets to her holiday pies. She would drive miles to root for them on their sports teams, in play performances, and dance recitals. Barb had an abiding faith, was a member of the United Methodist Church in DeWitt and then at Dayspring United in Phoenix where she enjoyed weekly bible study. She loved travel, playing the organ, sewing, entertaining, and spending as much time as she could with her children and grandchildren.
Barbara leaves behind three sons and a daughter and their spouses: Steve Couch and Gwen of Hahira, GA, Angela Dykstra and Guy Souther of San Gabriel, CA, Dean Dykstra and Cristi of Riverside, IA, and Darrell Couch and Becky, of Phoenix, AZ, and her brother, Larry Carroll and Carolyn, Thomson, IL. She says farewell to seven beloved grandchildren and one great grandchild. Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Dorothy Carroll, her husband William Couch, and her daughter, Dawne Dykstra.
