Barbara Ann (Brown) Cottral

September 17, 1930 — December 14, 2014

Barbara Ann (Brown) Cottral enjoyed gathering family and friends around her kitchen table. The term "head-of-household" was invented for a woman like Barb. At the age 84, Barb passed away Sunday, December 14, 2014 at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 19, 2014 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna with Father Dennis Atto as Celebrant. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Savanna. Visitation will be held 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday, December 18, 2014 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Memorials will be given to local charities.
Barbara was born September 17, 1930 in Savanna, the daughter of Frank A. and Ila Eloise (Lease) Brown, Jr. She is a 1948 graduate of the Savanna Township High School. On October 8, 1949, Barb married John "Jack" F. Cottral. He passed away November 19, 1999. They had celebrated fifty years of marriage.
Barb worked as a Beautician and Homemaker, raising six children. Everyone was always welcome in Barb's home. From just one of the six kids stopping by for a moment to the entire clan for Christmas Eve, the little brick bungalow on Diagonal Street was the hub of Cottral family activity for decades. We'll keep having the fish fries, but they'll never taste as good without Mom's deviled eggs.
Barb was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna City Council for twenty-one years, Savanna Ambulance Board for sixteen years, Women of the Moose, and also organized the railroad picnic for twenty-three years.
Barb will be dearly missed by her six children, Peg (Bob) Haffey of Savanna, Dan (Sandi) Cottral of Rock Island, Illinois, Pat (Steve) Kelley of Thomson, Illinois, Pam (Ron) Hebeler of Fulton, Illinois, David (Debbie) Cottral of Savanna and Cindy (Steve) Workman of Fulton; fifteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Tracey of Geneseo, Illinois; and a brother, George Brown of Thomson. Barb was preceded in death by her husband, both parents and a brother, Vernon.
