August "Butch" H. Franzen

August "Butch" H. Franzen, age 95, of Sabula, Iowa passed away Thursday, November 15, 2007 at Maquoketa Care Center, Maquoketa, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 19, 2007 at St. Peter Catholic Church, Sabula, Iowa with Father Don Plamondon as Celebrant. Cremation Rites will be accorded. Friends may call from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Monday, one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials may be made in August’s name.
August was born on January 11, 1912, the son of William and Anna (Zieser) Franzen in Preston, Iowa. He attended Sugar Creek schools. On October 25, 1932, August married Iola M. Schmidt in Spragueville, Iowa. Iola passed away in October of 1996.
August farmed and worked for the railroad until retirement. He very much loved spending time with his family; he enjoyed fishing, hunting and vegetable gardening.
August will be dearly missed by two sons, Nolan “Buck” Franzen of Sabula, Iowa, Gaylen “Jiggs” Franzen of Sabula, Iowa; five daughters, Aleda Lohmeier of Sabula, Iowa, Sharon (Harold) Jess of Elkton, Kentucky, Sandra (Eldon) Jepsen of Sabula, Iowa, Lynn Metz of Sabula, Iowa, Lanelle (Mike) Doerman of Sabula, Iowa; and one sister, Loretta Howard of Preston, Iowa; thirty-one grandchildren, fifty-five great-grandchildren and thirty-five great-great grandchildren.
August is preceded in death by his parents; wife Iola; two sons, Lyndell “Bummy” and Terrill “Pete” Franzen; four brothers and five sisters.
