Anthony "Tony" Basile

Anthony “Tony” Basile, age 89, of Savanna, Illinois, died Monday, June 21, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, Iowa. The funeral mass for Tony will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 26, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna. Father Moises Apostol will be officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Savanna. Friends may call from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday, June 25, at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. A rosary service will be at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Tony was born on Sunday, February 7, 1915, in Chicago, Illinois, to Antonio and Caroline (Carnivacciolli) Basile. He graduated from the McKinley High School in Chicago in 1933. He worked as a beer distributor in Savanna from 1933 to 1937 for John Ballas. Tony married Lorraine Ginie on February 8, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois. He then worked for Motorola Corporation from 1937 to 1950 as a supply foreman. After moving to Savanna in 1950 he operated a family shoe store, “The Savanna Shoe Box”, with his wife Lorraine from 1950 until his retirement in 1980. Tony also started Savanna’s first pizza business with his nephew, James Ballas and worked there part-time from 1953 until 1960.
Tony was very active in the Savanna community affairs, having served on the Savanna Park Board for more than thirty years. He had been the past President of the park board for many years. Tony was very instrumental in the park board developing the Savanna Marina. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the Savanna Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus, Savanna Chamber of Commerce, and the Savanna Moose Lodge.He enjoyed camping with his family for many years near Janesville, Wisconsin. He also liked to go to Chicago to watch the ball games and to watch movies, especially the old ones. He loved visiting with people. Most important to Tony was his family.
Tony is survived by his wife, Lorraine of Savanna; one son, Ron (Terrill) Basile of Knoxville, Tennessee; one daughter, Karen (Douglas) Dollard of Pleasanton, California; two grandchildren, Ryan and Christian Dollard; four step-grandchildren, Jeff (Lesia) Pittman, Mike (Laurie) Pittman, Kristi (Daniel) DeMarr, and Cindy (Jerry) Railey; and eight step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lucy and Anna Ballas; and three brothers, Ralph, Angelo, and Paul Basile.
