Ann Hecke, age 73, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, formerly of Pleasantville, Iowa, died Saturday, December 29, 2007, in her home.
Ann was born Anna Elizabeth Hanes in Canton, Missouri, on October 3, 1934, to Fred and Velma Hanes. She attended Kirksville High School (Missouri), graduated from the Metropolitan Junior College of Kansas City in 1969 with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing, and went on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree from Drake University in 1992. Throughout her career, she worked as a visiting nurse, in nursing homes, hospitals, a meat-packing plant and at the Knoxville Veteran's Administration, where she retired in 2000.
Ann enjoyed playing bingo and bridge, visiting family, shopping and dancing. She was active in the Pleasantville Food Pantry, the National Association of Retired Federal employees and the Pleasantville Rosie's Red Hat Society. She recently moved to Mt. Carroll, where she enjoyed spending time with the Mt. Carroll Brick Street Broads and the Methodist Church Circle Ladies.

Ann married David Shinn in 1951. She later married Coleman (Bruce) Hecke in 1969. She called him "Cebe", and he referred to her as his "Pretty Girl". They lived in Kansas City , Missouri, later moved to Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, and finally to Pleasantville, Iowa, in 1982. They were the love of each other's life. Bruce preceded her in death on July 27, 2006.
Ann will be dearly missed. She is survived by her children: David Shinn, Laura Miller, Elizabeth Berning and John Shinn, and their children and grandchildren. She is survived by her brothers and sisters: William Hanes, Fred Hanes, Sarah Thorington, and Velma Yeoham, and their families. She is survived by Bruce’s children: Sue Hecke, Kathy Barr, Bruce Hecke, Jr. and Jan Alvord, and their children and grandchildren.
She is also preceded in death by her brother Robert Hanes and her sister Jill Roodhouse.
She and Bruce now share the last dance.
