Anita P. Hanson age 85, of Savanna, Illinois, died Saturday, November 29, 2014 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 5, 2014 at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Savanna. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in Hanover, Illinois. Visitation will take place from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. Thursday, December 4, 2014 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna with a Rosary Service held at 2:30 p.m. prior to visitation at the funeral home.
She was born Anita Marcella Peschang on December 21, 1928 in Hanover, the daughter of Harry Melchoir and Thirza Mary (Chapman) Peschang. Raised in Hanover, she graduated from the Hanover High School in 1946. After graduation, she taught first through eighth grades at the Knapp country school on a provisional teaching certificate and attended the Platteville teacher’s college during the summer. She later attended the University of Illinois College of Education. On December 29, 1951, she married John Ralph Hanson at Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hanover and left school to raise a family. While living in Aurora, Illinois, she returned to school, earning a degree in elementary education from the University of Chicago Circle in 1973. She worked as a substitute teacher and also worked as a bookkeeper for the Venture store and McDonald’s in Aurora.
Anita enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, and music. In her younger years, she played clarinet in the Hanover High School band and the family band, as well as the Legion band in Savanna and Eagle band in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. She was involved in church activities in Savanna including the church choir, the Catholic Women of Saint John the Baptist, and the prayer shawl group.
Surviving are her husband, John; her children, Dr. David Hanson of Savanna, Donald (Beth) Hanson of North Aurora, Illinois, Timothy (Sharon) Hanson of Oxford, Ohio, and Catherine (Leonard Bartkowiak) Hanson of Aurora; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister Edith Anne (John) Dwinnells of Woodbine.
