Ambrose Wallace Beck, age 90, of Goose Lake, Iowa passed away Monday, July 2, 2018 at Crestridge Care Center, Maquoketa, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 7, 2018 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston, Iowa. Burial will take place in Spragueville Cemetery, Spragueville, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the funeral home prior to the service.
Ambrose was born May 17, 1928 to George and Arminda (Hageman) Beck in rural Preston and grew up on the family farm near Spragueville. He attended country school. On July 23, 1954, Ambrose married Caryl Asmussen at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Preston. Together they raised four children and celebrated 63 years of marriage. Ambrose served as a Sergeant in the Iowa National Guard for 11 years.
Ambrose farmed in Spragueville for 25 years. He and Caryl later moved to Goose Lake and farmed in the area until recently. He was a farmer, fence builder, and carpenter for 61 years until his retirement. He was a member of the Spragueville Lutheran Church. He enjoyed collecting farm toys, hunting, tractor pulling, socializing, and bowling. In his early years, Ambrose was an avid baseball player and played semi-professionally.
Ambrose will be dearly missed by his wife, Caryl; four children, Carla (Bill) Hamilton of Charlotte, Iowa, Tammy (Steve) Baxter of Jerome, Indiana, Lenn (Cheri Oakes) Beck of Clinton, Iowa, and Andy (Ellie Dobson) Beck of Preston, Iowa; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Felderman of Maquoketa, Iowa; and one brother, Robbert (Lenora) Beck of Sabula, Iowa.
Ambrose is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Chelsea and George, Jr.; and three sisters, Ruth Specht, Virginia Bees, and Joyce McCartney.
