Alvin (Woody) Woodside, age 71, of 7830 Oakville Road, Mt. Carroll, died October 9, 2007 at Freeport Memorial Hospital. Woody chose to donate his body to the University of Iowa for research.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 20, at 1 pm at the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Harkness officiating. Immediately following the service, the family invites everyone to join them in Fellowship Hall for visiting and refreshments.
Woody was born August 14, 1936 to Lyle and Rena (Hobart) Woodside in Hancock County. He attended the local schools, graduating in 1954 and served in the US Army from 1955-1957. He graduated from Western Illinois University in 1961 with a teaching degree in Industrial Arts. Woody married Nancy Mueller August 30, 1959 in La Harpe, IL. They moved to Mt. Carroll, IL, in 1961 along with their year old son, Jeff, where he taught for 16 years. In 1968 he graduated from University of Wisconsin, Platteville with a masters degree in Industrial Education. Daughter Mary Kay was born December 25, 1963 and Molly was born January 27, 1969.
In 1977 the family bought the Gambles Hardware store in Mt. Carroll and operated this business until purchasing the Oakville Country Club in 1985. He continued in this endeavor until the time of his death.
Woody was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Mt. Carroll Lions Club that honored him with the Melvin Jones Award, and Pheasants Forever. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, photography, and never passed a chance to play golf or cards with his friends. His children and grandchildren held a special place in his heart.
Survivors include his wife, son Jeff (Kim) of Mt. Carroll, daughters Mary Kay (David) Rath of Savanna, and Molly (Gary) Phillips of Juda, WI., 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, his mother Rena Woodside of Macomb, IL., three sisters, Joan (Don) Painter of Lewistown, IL., Wanda (Donald) Driskell of Blandinsville, IL., and Karen (Jay) Smith of Grosse Ile, MI. He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Dean.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church, the Mt. Carroll Lions Club, the Chadwick or Mt. Carroll Ambulance Associations or a charity of your choice.
