Alvin W. Kehl, age 81, of Mt. Carroll passed away Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna, Illinois. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday. June 9, 2011 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church with Reverend Elizabeth Mascal officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll with Military Rites by the Mt. Carroll American Legion. Visitation will be held 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Memorials may be made in Alvin’s honor for FHN Hospice.
Alvin was born April 19, 1930 in Mt. Carroll, the son of Howard and Florence Ellen (Slick) Kehl. He is a 1947 graduate of the Mt. Carroll High School. Alvin served in the Army as a 1st Lt. platoon leader during the Korean War. He received the Distinguished Service Cross, the country's second highest military honor.
On September 30, 1951 Alvin married Dorothy Outzen in Clinton, Iowa. They had three children, Steven, Kurtis and Peggy. Alvin and Dorothy farmed near Mt. Carroll on the family farm. Alvin also served as the Mayor of Polsgrove. Dorothy passed away August 21, 1990. Alvin continued to farm until 1995 when he retired. On October 4, 1997 Alvin married Eleanor Knauer. She passed away March 2, 2007.
Alvin was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mt. Carroll and the Mt. Carroll American Legion Post #67. He enjoyed farming, golfing and fishing. Most important to Alvin was his family and friends.
Alvin is survived by two sons, Steven (Linda) Kehl of Mt. Carroll; Kurtis Kehl of Springfield, Virginia; a daughter, Peggy (Vern) Johnson of Bartonville, Illinois; a step-daughter, Janice (Calvin) Cramer of Fulton, Illinois; a grandson, Jeff Johnson four step grandchildren, Betsy (Dale) Claussen, Rick (Amy) Medal, Victoria Medal and Jennifer (Matt) Plastiak; three step-great grandchildren, Matthew, Sean and Matias; and a brother, Richard Kehl of Mt. Carroll. Alvin is preceded in death by both wives and his parents.
